Waterless cosmetics: why our formulas are anhydrous

Formule cosmétique anhydre maliā care, sans eau, ingrédients purs

Waterless cosmetics, or anhydrous cosmetics, refers to formulas designed without a single drop of water. At maliā care, this is not a marketing ploy: it is a fundamental choice that structures all our formulations.

Why do so many cosmetics contain water?

Water has three immediate advantages for an industrialist: it is free, it lightens the texture, and it increases the product's volume without increasing its cost. A €30 cream containing 70% water is, mathematically, €21 of water paid at the price of a treatment.

But water has a major drawback: it is a culture medium for bacteria, yeasts, and molds. To prevent the formula from spoiling in a few days, preservatives must be added. And the more water the formula contains, the higher the dose of preservatives needed. This is why conventional creams often contain phenoxyethanol, parabens, or natural preservatives in significant quantities.

Cosmetics rich in water are therefore almost always cosmetics that contain more preservatives than active ingredients.

What is a waterless (anhydrous) formula?

An anhydrous formula is a formula built solely from fatty ingredients: vegetable butters, oils, waxes, sometimes a few oil-soluble active ingredients. It contains no aqueous phase. This is the oldest form of cosmetics — the one that was made before the need to emulsify to mix water and fat.

Our Ultra-nourishing balm and our Hydrating facial serum are both anhydrous formulas. No water, no emulsifiers, no synthetic preservatives needed.

Waterless cosmetics allow active ingredients to be concentrated to the maximum, whereas a conventional emulsion sometimes contains less than 5%.

The advantages of a waterless formula

Extreme concentration of active ingredients

When you remove 70% water from a formula, there's 70% more room for useful ingredients. Every drop of our serum is a pure concentrate of argan oil, prickly pear, black seed, and jojoba. No dilution. That's why a tiny amount is enough to cover the entire face, and a 30ml bottle lasts several months.

No preservatives needed

Without water, bacteria do not have the medium they need to grow. An anhydrous formula naturally keeps for several months without any preservatives. This is particularly valuable for sensitive, atopic, or reactive skin to conventional preserving ingredients.

Reduced environmental impact

A more concentrated formula also means a product that lasts longer. A smaller bottle means less plastic, less transport, less waste. For equal effectiveness, anhydrous cosmetics have a significantly lower carbon footprint than a conventional cream — the industry estimates this reduction to be between 30 and 60%, depending on the formats.

A product that travels

No water also means no problems in the airplane cabin, no risk of leaks in a kit, no stress with heat. An anhydrous balm can withstand much wider temperature variations than a conventional cream.

The limits — let's be honest

But waterless cosmetics also have their limits: certain textures, like lotions, are impossible to replicate.

An anhydrous formula is not magic. It also has characteristics that need to be understood:

  • The texture is denser. An oil balm or serum requires a different gesture than a classic cream: you take less, you warm it between your fingers, you take the time to massage. It's a slower, more conscious routine.
  • No immediate "fresh" effect. Creams with 80% water provide a pleasant feeling of freshness upon application. This is water evaporating. An anhydrous formula does not have this effect: it penetrates, it nourishes, but it does not cool the skin.
  • No direct hydration. Technically, water provides an immediate hydrating effect. An anhydrous formula, on the other hand, helps the skin retain its water thanks to its strengthened barrier function. It's a longer-term, deeper hydration, but one that requires a little patience to be visible.

These limitations are not flaws: they are choices. And they correspond to what we believe to be a fairer, more sustainable, more effective cosmetic approach.

How we formulate at maliā care

Our formulas are designed for skin that lives outdoors — exposed to sun, salt, wind. These are skins that need nourishment and repair, more than added water. Exposed skin already loses a lot of water daily. Adding more makes no sense — the main thing is to help it retain what it has.

For us, every ingredient serves a precise function. No fillers, no water paid at the price of a treatment. Raw shea butter, argan oil, prickly pear oil, black seed oil, jojoba oil. Nothing else.

This commitment guides everything else: artisan production in Morocco, small batches, reduced packaging. Waterless cosmetics are not a marketing argument for us — they are the backbone of the brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a waterless formula truly hydrate the skin?

Yes, but differently from a conventional cream. An anhydrous formula strengthens the skin barrier and limits the natural water loss of the skin (TEWL in scientific terms). Hydration is indirect but more lasting.

Should I apply a water-based moisturizer before a waterless product?

This is ideal for dry skin: a hydrosol or floral water beforehand, then the serum or balm on top to "seal" the hydration.

How long does a waterless product last?

12 to 24 months after opening, provided it is kept away from heat and direct light. Much longer than a conventional cream.

Is a waterless formula suitable for oily skin?

Yes, provided the right ingredients are chosen. Our serum, for example, contains jojoba oil — a sebum-regulating active ingredient that rebalances combination and oily skin without overloading it.

Why do most brands continue to use water?

For economic reasons (lower cost) and marketing reasons (lighter, more "pleasant" texture on first try). But a new generation of brands is making the opposite choice, with a more demanding approach to active ingredients.
