Prickly pear seed oil: the most precious anti-aging oil

Huile de figue de barbarie pure maliā care - flacon doré au cactus

Prickly pear seed oil is one of the rarest and most precious cosmetic oils in the world. Extracted from the seeds of the Opuntia ficus-indica cactus, it takes nearly 30 kg of seeds to produce just one liter of oil. This rarity, combined with a record-breaking vitamin E content, makes it Morocco's anti-aging gold and a star ingredient in high-end natural cosmetics.

At maliā care, we've incorporated it into our hydrating facial serum. Here's everything you need to know: origin, composition, benefits, and how to recognize a true quality oil.

What is prickly pear seed oil?

Prickly pear seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the fruit of a cactus, Opuntia ficus-indica. This succulent plant, native to Central America, has acclimated for centuries to the semi-arid regions of the Mediterranean basin, particularly in Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, and southern Spain.

In English, it's called prickly pear seed oil. The names change, but the oil remains the same: a golden, fluid liquid with a subtle plant-like scent, pressed from the tiny black seeds nestled in the fruit's flesh.

30 kg of seeds for 1 liter of oil

It's no surprise this oil is expensive: its yield is tiny. A prickly pear fruit contains an average of 300 seeds, which weigh barely 5% of the fruit's weight. And each seed contains only 5 to 10% oil.

Specifically: it takes approximately 30 kilograms of seeds, and therefore more than a ton of fruit, to obtain just one liter of pure prickly pear seed oil.

The artisanal process unfolds in several stages:

  • Harvesting ripe fruits by hand, in summer, usually in August
  • Extracting the pulp
  • Separating and washing the seeds
  • Sun-drying
  • Cold-pressing the seeds to extract the oil

Everything is manual, slow, and requires local expertise. This is why true quality oils almost always come from small cooperatives in Morocco or Tunisia.

An exceptional composition

If prickly pear seed oil fascinates formulators, it is primarily for its unique composition among vegetable oils.

Vitamin E: a record

With approximately 1,000 mg/kg of tocopherols (PubMed Central study), it is the richest vegetable oil in vitamin E in the world. This is almost twice as much as argan oil, already renowned for its concentration. And vitamin E is one of the most powerful antioxidants for the skin.

Linoleic acid (omega-6)

It contains up to 60% linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that the skin does not produce. This acid helps to rebuild the lipid cement of the epidermis, thereby strengthening the skin barrier and limiting dehydration.

Phytosterols

Its sterol content, particularly beta-sitosterol and campesterol, makes it a soothing and regenerating active ingredient.

Comparison with other precious oils

Oil Vitamin E (mg/kg) Linoleic Acid Average price (10 ml)
Prickly Pear Seed Oil ~1,000 ~60 % €40-60
Argan Oil ~600 ~36 % €8-15
Jojoba Oil ~350 ~14 % €5-10

Proven benefits: anti-aging prickly pear seed oil

Prickly pear seed oil is often described as a natural anti-aging agent. This is well-deserved, but here's precisely why.

Antioxidant: slowing down skin aging

Prickly pear seed oil is now considered one of the most effective natural anti-aging active ingredients.

Free radicals are the main cause of cellular aging. The ultra-concentrated vitamin E in prickly pear seed oil captures these free radicals and limits their effects: loss of firmness, pigment spots, wrinkles.

Deep hydration and regulation

Unlike many other vegetable oils, prickly pear seed oil does not clog pores and is perfectly tolerated by combination skin. It penetrates quickly without leaving a greasy film. Its sebum-regulating action is suitable for dry, combination, or mature skin.

Plumping and firming effect

It is this synergy of actions that makes prickly pear seed oil a recognized treatment for its visible effects on skin firmness. Its richness in essential fatty acids stimulates natural collagen production and restores skin tone, particularly around the eyes and décolleté area.

Healing

The phytosterols it contains support healing processes. It is often recommended to reduce acne marks, light stretch marks, and recent scars.

How to use prickly pear seed oil

Prickly pear seed oil can be used pure or as a complement to a skincare routine.

As a facial serum, morning and evening

One to two drops are sufficient. Warm between palms, apply with gentle pressure on cleansed skin. No need for lengthy massage: it penetrates quickly.

Around the eyes

The most delicate area of the face also benefits most from its antioxidant richness. A single drop gently patted in the evening is enough.

Prickly pear seed oil as an intensive treatment

During periods of stress, fatigue, or seasonal changes, prickly pear seed oil can be used as a 2 to 3-week treatment, in addition to your usual routine.

Recognizing quality prickly pear seed oil

Given its price, it is one of the most counterfeited oils on the market. Here's how to distinguish a real one from a fake.

  • 100% pure: no blending with other oils. The INCI should only list Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil.
  • Authenticity markers

    • Traceable origin: Morocco, Tunisia, or the Mediterranean basin. If the origin is unclear, avoid.
    • First cold pressing: the only method that preserves antioxidants.
    • 100% pure: no blending with other oils. The INCI should only list Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil.
    • Packaging: tinted glass bottle, as the oil oxidizes in light.
    • Color: light gold to deep gold. An oil that is too yellow or too green is suspicious.
    • Scent: subtle, vegetal, slightly herbaceous. No nutty or neutral smell, which indicates refining or cutting.
    • Price: expect at least €30 to €40 for 10 ml from a reputable producer.

    Beware of false promises

A "prickly pear seed oil" sold for €10 per 30 ml bottle is very likely cut with sunflower oil or low-grade argan oil. True oil, due to its rarity, cannot be priced this low.

Prickly pear seed oil in our serum

At maliā care, we have incorporated prickly pear seed oil into our hydrating facial serum, alongside argan oil and black seed oil. Three complementary oils, three active ingredients sourced directly from Morocco, from partner cooperatives.

Our hydrating facial serum is formulated 100% water-free, to maximize active ingredient concentration and ensure the long-term stability of prickly pear seed oil.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is prickly pear seed oil suitable for oily skin?

Yes. Its richness in linoleic acid makes it a dry-touch oil that penetrates quickly and leaves no residue. It regulates sebum production rather than stimulating it.

From what age can prickly pear seed oil be used?

It can be started at any age, but its anti-aging benefits are most noticeable from age 30 onwards, as a preventative measure against the first signs of aging.

Can prickly pear seed oil be used on hair?

Yes, but it's rare given its price. Argan oil is generally preferred for hair, while prickly pear seed oil remains reserved for the face and eye contour.

How long does prickly pear seed oil last?

When properly stored in a tinted glass bottle away from light and heat, it will last 12 to 18 months after opening.

Why is prickly pear seed oil so expensive?

Because 30 kg of seeds, which means over a ton of fruit, are needed to produce 1 liter of oil. The process is entirely manual, slow, and concentrates an exceptional botanical rarity.
